ABOUT SEQUALITCHEW

Sequalitchew Creek Canyon is an historic region that has been inhabited for about 5,000 years. In recent years, the Hudson's Bay Company operated Fort Nisqually near here from 1833 through the 1850s. The trail was also a narrow-gauge railroad transporting DuPont explosives to a wharf.

Sequalitchew is a Coast Salish (Lushootseed language) word that has several meanings but describes a "shallow place" or "long run-out tide." Ancestors of Nisqually tribal members settled here thousands of years ago. Shellfish middens in the area are at least 5,000 years old.
