The Friends of Puget Prairies host Prairie Appreciation Day every year in May to experience the Glacial Heritage Site in full bloom. The Black River-Mima Prairie Glacial Heritage Preserve, known as Glacial Heritage, is an excellent example of the Puget Prairie ecosystem which greeted the settlers of the 1800’s. Less than 3% of this type of ecosystem still exists. Thurston County Parks and Recreation Department owns this unique property, which is only open during sponsored events. The Nature Conservancy and a number of federal, state and local groups and organizations are working together to remove non-native plants and preserve this area.
